Last time we went through the best all-time fighting video games, which included a few 80s and 90s arcade classics. The top ten Tuesday of this week keeps things rolling, with an emphasis on the best arcade games of all time. If you’ve ever stepped up to an arcade, a movie theater, or a bowling alley, you’ve definitely heard some of these arcade hits.
3. The Simpsons – Konami had a lot of success with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and with The Simpsons, they created a similar beat-’em-up style game. You may play as Homer, Marge, Bart, or Lisa — with each character having their own preference weapon (with the exception of Homer, who used punches and kicks). The all-time hit animated series had only debuted a few years before the release of the arcade game in 1991 and it could definitely not have harmed the success of the show.
1. Street Fighter II – Adjusted for inflation and against home-gaming titans like Call of Duty in the 21st century, Street Fighter II (released in 1991) is now one of the top ten grossing all-time video games, with over $10 billion in gross sales. The newer arcade games — especially the fighting genre — might not have been what they were without paving the way for Capcom’s Street Fighter II. Street Fighter II introduced the select screen for the game, which is something that is hard to imagine today not being around.
1. Marvel vs. Capcom – Super Heroes Clash With the advantage of being published some years after Street Fighter II, Marvel vs. Capcom may have been able to make changes to the gameplay that offer it a slight edge — but the argument is a matter of choice. An advantage of Marvel vs. Capcom is the ability to play with Marvel characters such as Wolverine and Captain America, which appealed to many ordinary people who knew such super-heroes. Marvel vs. Capcom was a prototypical arcade game a kid could get on instantly and have a lot of fun playing.
Maybe your favorites aren’t on this list, but let’s be honest here with ourselves, not every cabinet that fell in the 1990s was awesome. However, we can ensure some of your favorites were certainly on this best arcade games of all time list. They are all classics that have been accredited. Does anybody have a quarter I could borrow?
